Meet the Leader: Noel O'Connell, Regional Vice President - Australia

Toast Careers

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I grew up on a farm in the beautiful Irish countryside in the county of Tipperary, Ireland. I am the second youngest of ten siblings. From an early age, I was out working on the farm with my father and brothers. It's a world away from what I am doing now!

In college, I studied commerce. In order to pay for my rent and living expenses, I worked in a call centre selling A.O.L minutes to the American and English markets. This was my first brush with sales and I was pretty decent at it.

After college, I moved to the United States and lived there for two years. I worked for a furniture company that was based in Boston but I was able to travel all over hauling furniture. I made lots of new friends, and saw vast amounts of America.

When I returned home to Ireland, I went back into sales, selling everything from advertising space to gardening products! After Ireland was hit by the financial crash, I emigrated to the Netherlands to find work. Then I moved to the UK where I was part of the go-to-market team of Groupon. This is where I caught the GTM bug.

I later moved back to Ireland to take a position as the founding Irish Account Executive for OpenTable, starting my career in hospitality technology. I stayed at OpenTable for ten years. During this time, I travelled a huge amount to the States, which is when I first became aware of Toast. I was hugely impressed by the system and what Toast had to offer. I always said that when Toast came to Ireland/Europe, I would make it my business to work for them. Sure enough, Toast opened a GTM team in Dublin. The rest, as they say, is history.

I have been happily married to my wife Aisling for 14 years. I am a proud girl dad to Ada, Annie, and Bonnie. They are my motivation for everything. Without my girls I don't know where I would be!

Tell us about your transition into the Regional Vice President of Australia role. It must be exciting to be a founding member for Toast in a new region!

After I had been at Toast for about two years, the opportunity presented itself to become the Regional Vice President of Australia in early 2025. Bolstered by the support of my wife I applied for the role. I was successful and could not wait for the opportunity to set Toast up, down under!

I believe I was selected for the role in large part because of the teams in Dublin. The dedication and hard work of the sales, onboarding, and field technician teams made Toast a success in Ireland. They did so much of the hard yards while I made sure that everything stayed between the ditches. Also during this time, I was able to grow my leadership skills because of great coaching from many leaders across Toast.

I have been down in Australia for the past six months and we have had amazing success building out our sales and onboarding teams. They have been outstanding and smashed our 2025 sales and go-live targets.

In your experience, how does Toast’s product innovation and the caliber of people here create a competitive advantage that you haven't seen elsewhere?

Having spent over 13 years in hospitality tech, I can honestly say there is nothing quite like what we have here at Toast.

On the product side, the innovation is simply a game changer. In my previous life, I saw restaurateurs struggling to stitch together five or six different systems just to get through a service. It was a headache for them. Toast coming in with a true "all-in-one" platform changed the conversation entirely. Seeing that impact firsthand is what made me fall in love with the company in the first place.

However, you can have the best technology in the world, but it means nothing without the right people behind it. That is the real secret sauce at Toast. The caliber of people I get to work with, from the product teams in Boston and India, to our sales and onboarding teams in Dublin, and now the team here in Australia, is unmatched.

There is a genuine passion here that I haven't seen elsewhere. Toasters don't just "work" in tech; they truly care about the restaurant community. When you combine a product that actually solves problems with a team willing to do the hard work to ensure our customers succeed, you get a competitive advantage that is very hard to beat. It’s that combination of world-class tech and world-class people that makes me proud to wear the Toast logo every day.

What is your favorite part of working with our customers, and what unique potential do you see in the Australia hospitality scene?

I love working in hospitality because I don't think you will find more passionate people in any other walk of life. It is truly infectious. Every single restaurant is unique and has a story to tell; in many ways, the venue is an extension of the owners and their dreams. No day is ever really the same, so things are always fresh and new, which keeps me on my toes!

Regarding the potential down under: it is massive. The standard of hospitality in Australia is first-rate, and the food and coffee culture here is second to none. Because of that high standard, the operators are incredibly tech-focused and savvy. They understand that technology is more than a tool; it's a way to deliver better guest experiences.

While there are many quality competitors in the market, there is no one providing the full "all-in-one" partnership that Toast can offer a restaurant. We have a real opportunity to change the game here.

I am beyond excited to spread the good word of Toast with my teams in 2026. We are going to paint the country orange!

Which Toast value does your team bring to life most?

I love our Toast values; they are the compass for everything we do. I consider myself very lucky to work with a team down here that truly lives and breathes "raise the bar."

We have worked hard to create a culture where we can give each other open and honest feedback. It’s not about criticism; it’s about ensuring that as a unit, we all grow, learn, and unlock our potential together.

For the Australia team, "Raising the Bar" means there are absolutely no shortcuts. We are disciplined in following the Sandler methodology to ensure we are focused and productive every single day.

What advice would you give to a sales professional in Australia who is considering their next career opportunity, and why should they consider joining the Toast team?

My advice is simple: Master your current role first. You have to do the hard yards and prove yourself where you are before looking at what is next. Be a sponge for feedback, be a team player, and always look for those additional projects that will stretch your potential.

Crucially, if you want to excel in a GTM environment like ours, you have to accept and enjoy the ambiguity. Things change fast, and you have to be adaptable. That is where the real learning happens.

As for why you should join Toast right now? It is the best of both worlds. You get the backing and product power of a successful global company, but here in Australia, you get the energy and excitement of a startup. You have the chance to come in on the ground floor and help build the legacy of Toast in this region.
