This Line of Business (LOB) is dedicated to improving team engagement, retention, and operational effectiveness for our customers and their team members.

We are hiring an experienced Counsel to join our Legal team. As Counsel, Toast Payroll & Team Management,  you will support the Toast Payroll & Team Management business unit, which offers a suite of back-office customer solutions, including but not limited to payroll, tips management, scheduling, and more. The Toast Payroll & Team Management business unit is transforming the way restaurants and retailers manage and connect with their employees. 

As Counsel, Toast Payroll & Team Management, you will collaborate directly with cross-functional teams, including Product, Engineering, Marketing, Compliance, and Sales. In doing so, you will gain a deep understanding of Toast's products, strategies, and processes to offer pragmatic legal advice and help the business identify and mitigate potential legal risks.

 

Toast offers remote and hybrid work flexibility. Our Legal & Compliance teams are primarily concentrated in Boston, Chicago, New York, Washington DC, and San Francisco. Candidates residing in these areas will benefit from closer proximity to colleagues and greater access to company resources and events.

 

About this roll* (Responsibilities) 

  • Guide and advise Product, Engineering, Customer Experience, Sales, and Marketing teams across the entire product development lifecycle, from concept through launch, with a primary focus on payroll and employee-related products. 
  • Provide practical, solution-oriented advice to business stakeholders on a broad range of legal issues, including product, regulatory compliance, consumer protection, privacy, and various contracts (customer, partnership).
  • Stay current on federal, state, and local laws and regulations impacting the Toast Payroll & Team Management platform, creatively navigating complex regulatory environments to ensure a smooth and compliant user experience.
  • Advise Marketing and Content teams on customer-facing marketing and editorial content, ensuring advertising and marketing law compliance. This includes reviewing marketing strategies and assets.
  • Collaborate with lines of business stakeholders to address customer contractual inquiries, driving standardization to enhance proactive resolution and streamline future processes.
  • Partner across multiple functions, exhibiting a deep understanding of Toast products and how their evolution is influenced by applicable laws and regulations.

 

Do you have the right ingredients*? (Must Haves)

  • Foundational Requirements:
    • J.D. from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school; active state bar membership.
    • 5-10 years of legal experience, preferably in-house with a payroll or HR service provider or a similar fast-paced, high-growth technology/FinTech company offering Team Management solutions.
  • Legal Domain Knowledge:
    • Deep and current expertise in product, regulatory compliance, privacy, marketing, intellectual property, and consumer protection laws.
    • Strong preference for knowledge of multi-state employment laws, including wage and hour and payroll, across the employee lifecycle.
  • Functional Legal Application:
    • Proven in-house counsel experience advising product teams throughout the entire product lifecycle, exhibiting a deep understanding of product functionality.
    • Skilled in drafting and negotiating product integration agreements and managing complex customer terms and conditions negotiations.
    • Experience in advertising and marketing law compliance, including reviewing marketing and editorial content.
    • Ability to advise on multi-state laws, disclaimers, and disclosures for diverse user groups, demonstrating creative problem-solving in complex regulatory environments.
  • Key Competencies:
    • Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex legal concepts succinctly to non-legal audiences.
    • A highly collaborative approach, with proven ability to integrate effectively into cross-functional teams and build strong partnerships.
    • A solution-oriented, customer-service, and growth mindset.

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions, if eligible), benefits, and equity (if eligible).

Pay Range
$137,000—$219,000 USD
