Unlimited Potential: Growing Your Career on Toast’s Sales Team

Paige M., Senior Program Manager, Employer Brand

We’re honored that Toasters choose to grow their careers here. We take this very seriously, so it’s a top priority for us to ensure we provide employees with opportunities to develop new skills and reach their goals– both professionally and personally.

One way we help employees grow is through our internal mobility– or doughbility– program. This program provides Toasters with guidelines, processes, and resources to not only better understand career options ahead of them, but decide which one is the best match for them.

Our Sales organization is a great example of how we set Toasters up for success long term. Read on to hear from four members of our Sales team who have been able to move into new positions!

Tell me a little bit about your career path at Toast.

“I started at Toast as a Business Development Rep (BDR) in the Boston office. It was my first job out of college and there was a great atmosphere for career development. After about a year as a BDR, I took an Inside Sales position, selling into North and South Dakota. I loved this period because Toast didn't have a strong foothold in this area yet and I was able to expedite our growth there. A lot of the restaurant technology in this area was super outdated, so Toast brought a ton of value to those making the switch over. After the Dakotas, I transitioned to selling and working with customers in Long Island, New York. I've worked my way through a couple promotions as an Account Executive on Long Island. The market on Long Island is very competitive, fast-paced, and diverse. I've had the pleasure of working with businesses from their first store to their 20th and have helped other stores get the most out of Toast to help their business thrive as much as possible.”

“I began my career at Toast right after college as a Sales Development Representative (SDR), where I focused on the top-of-funnel sales process, including qualifying leads and booking meetings. During this time, I benefited from incredible leadership and mentorship from Account Executives, which inspired me to pursue a similar path. After honing my skills and gaining valuable experience, I was promoted to Territory Account Executive in Honolulu, Hawaii. In this role, I now manage the entire sales cycle, from prospecting to closing, and am responsible for driving growth in this region.”

“My career at Toast started out as an SDR. My team and I were the first ones to chat with potential new clients wanting to use and implement Toast for the first time. I worked hand and hand with Account Executives in order to learn more about the prospect, book meetings, and hopefully sell them Toast! After a little over a year, I started to pursue a field sales role in the Miami, Florida area as an Account Executive (AE). As an AE I still use a majority of the fundamentals I learned as an SDR, but now I'm responsible for the entire sales cycle from initial discussion, all the way to final sale and implementation.”

Juan G., Territory Account Executive, Miami, Florida

“My career path at Toast has been incredibly rewarding. I started as an SDR, based in Houston, Texas, where my primary focus was on qualifying inbound leads. I worked closely with prospects to identify their pain points and share how Toast could help them streamline their operations. After building a great relationship with the Territory team here in Houston and consistently hitting quota, I was promoted to a Territory Account Executive. In this role, I manage a portfolio of restaurants, working directly with business owners to implement customized solutions that help them grow and succeed. It's been a fulfilling journey, and I'm excited to continue making an impact!”

Gerald G., Territory Account Executive, Houston, Texas

How did Toast support you throughout these transitions?

“I believe this starts with the culture at Toast. Not only was my manager supportive of my career development, but he also helped answer questions through the various steps of my development and pushed me to better myself along the way. This support was continued with enablement programs like Prep Station where SDRs shadowed and developed their skills alongside AEs through an 8-week program. Even after the program was complete, the support from my manager and the SDR org continued. The conversations about career progression never stopped and I was given the freedom to continue to work alongside the local AE team until something opened up to apply for.”

“Toast has been incredibly supportive throughout my journey. I used the professional development stipend last year to attend AfroTech, a large tech conference for the Black community. It was a valuable experience. A major part of my growth came from partnering with Account Executives and doing ride-alongs, where I gained deeper insights into the business. This hands-on learning and mentorship were key to my success and transition into the AE role.”

What initially drew you to a position at Toast?

“Throughout college, I worked as a bartender and server, where I often struggled with the outdated and inefficient technology we were using. A family friend who was already working at Toast introduced me to the company, and I was drawn to its values and mission. Given my deep connection to the restaurant industry, which has always been a central part of my life and a gathering place for friends and family, I knew working with small business owners in the tech space would be a perfect fit for me.”

Lauren C., Territory Account Executive, Honolulu, Hawaii

“What drew me to Toast was my passion for building relationships in the restaurant industry. My fiancée and I are regulars at local spots, and I’ve developed great connections with the staff. The chance to leverage those relationships while selling an industry-leading product felt like the perfect fit. It really felt like a match made in heaven!”

Gerald G., Territory Account Executive, Houston, Texas

What makes you want to continue your career at Toast? What opportunities do you see ahead?

“To see how far the Toast product has come in the seven years that I've been here is mind-blowing. With the depth of our product, we're able to offer so much more to our customers than ever before. I get to work with restaurants on a day-to-day basis to help implement new technology and provide value that can be truly life-changing. There is still a ton of opportunity in front of Toast in terms of our untapped markets and also new products that will only add to our current customers’ experience.”

Charlie F., Principal III Account Executive, Boston

“Growth is incredibly important to me, and I’m confident that Toast is a place where I can continue to evolve. In the short term, I’m excited about the opportunity for a senior promotion, and in the long term, I see myself transitioning into a people management role. My experiences as a mentor and a Prep Station AE have given me valuable exposure to different career paths within the company, and I’m eager to continue building on these experiences to support both my personal and professional growth.”

Lauren C., Territory Account Executive, Honolulu, Hawaii

“I love our brand and core values here at Toast, from our commitments to do right by the customer, to making one of the best technology products in the hospitality industry. Our future is bright and the commitment we give day in and day out to be the best is truly mesmerizing. For myself, I wish to continue my career progression here with a long term goal of getting into people management and continuing to learn and further my skillset further.”

Juan G., Territory Account Executive, MIami, Florida

What would you tell someone who is considering a sales position at Toast?

“A sales position at Toast is challenging but incredibly rewarding. This role has pushed me beyond what I initially imagined, leading to significant personal and professional growth. The continuous learning and development opportunities here have been key to my growth, and I truly feel like I’m being trained to be a world-class salesperson, no matter where my career leads. If you're willing to put in the work, the growth potential is immense, and the support you receive along the way makes it all the more fulfilling.”

Lauren C., Territory Account Executive, Honolulu, Hawaii

“Go for it! The growth potential is endless as long as you are willing to commit yourself to learning more about all aspects of sales, hospitality and technology. The experience I've gained is priceless and I'm sure it can be the same for you or anyone considering a sales position here. Truly empowering!”

Juan G., Territory Account Executive, MIami, Florida
