Embracing a Hospitality Mindset through an Employee-Centric Mission

Kate B.

Senior Manager of Amenities and Experiences

We’re committed to providing an employee-centric hybrid style of working for all Toasters. We know that some folks do their best work from home, in one of our offices, or a mix of both! Regardless of where you work, we are excited to offer an array of events and programming, either in person or virtually, to bring Toasters together and help foster a strong, collaborative community.

For Toasters working in our Boston office, Kate B., Senior Manager of Amenities and Experiences, is a staple to the in-office experience. Kate and her team delight Toasters every day through their thoughtful programs, welcoming workspaces, and delicious cuisine, served by local Toast customers. Learn more about Kate’s team below!

Tell me a little bit about your path to Toast. What had you been doing prior to joining the team?

A deep love of food sent me down a professional wormhole, and I was fortunate enough to work at some amazing restaurants in NYC, Nantucket, Montana, and, most recently, Portland, OR. Prior to Toast, I was the Food & Beverage Director at the Hoxton hotel in downtown Portland. When the pandemic occurred, we moved back to Massachusetts to be closer to family. I traded  Willamette Wine Country, hiking the gorge, and zero sales tax for Bostonian sarcasm mixed with dark humor and never looked back. (Well, almost never.)

Why did you decide to join Toast? What was the most exciting part of the opportunity for you?

I am a hospitality tech nerd - as I’ve used just about every system in existence - and I ascertained that Toast was quite simply the best tech in the biz. I was at a point in my life where I was ready for a new challenge and chapter. The idea of using my years in the field to really dig into the technology that made everything tick was incredibly inspirational to me.

I have always been passionate about bringing people joy and adding value to their life experiences. In restaurants and hotels - that meant my team, our guests, and the industry at large.

I ended up finding a dream job at Toast working on the WE’RE Team (Workplace Experience and Real Estate) - first as the Food & Beverage Program Manager, and now as the Senior Manager of Amenities and Experiences. How lucky am I that the purpose of my role here is to make Toast a wonderful and exciting place to be? And the cherry on top, is knowing that the work we all do together is helping the industry that has always been so near and dear to my heart.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Gym. Tan. Laundry.

What is your team's mission? When you are planning your goals for the year, what are you hoping to achieve?

Our mission is to create amazing workplace experiences. If you ever popped into a WE’RE Team meeting, you would generally encounter an extraordinarily kind group of people geeking out about how to make Toasters’ workplaces - whether office or remote - as practical, helpful, and positive as possible.

Each year we look back on what we accomplished and ask ourselves, Okay, how can we do that again, except better? The future of work is rapidly evolving, and as such our outlook needs to be nimble and forward-thinking.

We’re forever asking questions. What do Toasters want in a workplace experience? How can we foster connections between Toasters? And, dagnabbit, what makes working here fun?

What's one thing you wish more people knew about your team and the work that you all do?

We genuinely all love working with each other. We truly delight in what we do. And we are constantly making each other laugh. Now, whether or not we are actually funny is another story entirely.

What's the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is:

1. My team

2. Helping Toasters

3. Supporting the hospitality industry

4. Maybe the #toastbeards Slack channel?

What has been your favorite memory at Toast so far?

There are way too many to count. Moderating the customer speaker series for the Dublin and Omaha office openings last summer was pretty cool though. Also pretty much every time you land in a zoom meeting where everyone is accidentally wearing the same outfit.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

As a child, I was deathly afraid of clowns, horses, and Santa Claus. I also have a genetic aversion to cilantro.
