In recognition of our Season of Giving, Toast’s month-long initiative focused on food and nutrition security around the world, Toast Parents and Toast Mamas, Toast.org, and the Workplace Experience team collaborated to put on three in-office volunteer events with Blessings in a Backpack to pack 1,500 bags of food for local kids in the Boston, Chicago, and Omaha communities. Hear from a few of our Toasters about what the experience meant to them:
“It was heart-wrenching to learn how many children reach the weekend unsure of where their next meal will come from. But knowing that this initiative is nationwide and has provided millions of hunger-free weekends is truly inspiring. It really restores faith in humanity. For me, it’s personal. My family and I have been in a similar situation, not always knowing where our next meal might come from. While we were fortunate that it wasn’t our constant reality, I can relate to the uncertainty and stress that comes with it. The peace of knowing you’ll have a meal is something many take for granted, but it’s a feeling I’ll never forget, and one that I strive to help others experience. Being part of efforts like this fills my heart. With so many facing tough times, it’s reassuring to be part of a community that is so committed to lifting each other up. It truly means the world to me to help provide these essential items to families in need.” Shawntelle S., Customer Care Expert (Omaha, NE)

“As a parent, aunt, and great aunt, I know firsthand the importance of ensuring children have access to nutritious food throughout the weekend. What I loved most about the event was seeing everyone come together for a shared purpose—our combined efforts made me feel part of something bigger than myself. Knowing that each backpack packed will directly impact a child’s weekend reminds me of the power of community and how, together, we can make a real difference. This experience underscored for me how meaningful it is to work in a place that values giving back and empowers its employees to contribute. It has strengthened my commitment to continuing this kind of work and reminds me how fulfilling it is to know that we can all play a part in supporting families in need.” Brenda S., Customer Care Manager (Omaha, NE)

“The Blessings in a Backpack event truly touched me. Packing those bags, I thought about the kids who'd receive them and how hunger affects our communities. This wasn't just about filling stomachs, but showing families their community cares. It also brought us closer together, one backpack at a time. Moments like these remind me why I love being part of this team and community.” Greg, Customer Care Manager (Omaha, NE)

“Having lived in Chicago for 16 years, I’ve seen far too many children struggle with hunger and uncertainty about where their next meal will come from. It breaks my heart. Being able to help provide healthy meals for these kids feels incredibly rewarding. Knowing that we could brighten the day for 500 children was a blessing, and it was such a joy to meet some of my amazing colleagues in person. Together, we created a beautiful day filled with purpose and connection.” Shannon S., Onboarding Consultant (Chicago, IL)

“My experience volunteering for Blessings in a Backpack was amazing. It was so heartwarming to know that the backpacks we put together were going to be received by kids in need the very next day. Talk about making an impact on the community. I also loved writing notes of encouragement and joy to the kids receiving the backpacks. I left the event feeling so proud to work for Toast and to work with such amazing colleagues. Volunteering is a gift. Our Toast.org team and ambassadors makes it super easy to get involved and make a difference in the communities we serve.” Kim L., VP, People Success & Employee Relations (Boston, MA)
