Danielle's journey illustrates that while leading international expansion, when you stay hungry to learn and take full ownership of your work, you can deliver true impact can take you further than you might ever expect, even across continents!
When I first joined Toast out of college there were only about 300 people. The company was growing rapidly at the time and after a friend referred me, it seemed like the perfect place to start my career. Moving to the international team in this new role was something that I'd wanted to do since working with our first international customer. Being a part of all these new milestones brought me back to my early days at Toast. Everyone from my manager to leaders on the international team helped me reach this goal by supporting me along the way and involving me in more international deals and processes even before moving to the role fully.
I invest time during my first few weeks to meet everyone I can - members of the local sales team, product teams, and other folks I may start to work with. Understanding what their focus is and identifying where I may be able to support has helped me to build credibility. This allows me to move fast with an understanding of the teams around me. Prioritizing mutual support across teams has always helped me build trust and partnerships, which allows me to deliver impact quickly.
In international markets, things are changing quickly and evolving daily. Toast’s value - hungry to build and learn speaks to our environment and it almost feels like working in a startup, but with all the support of Toast as a major company. With each new country Toast moves to, it's as if you get a “do-over.” You're getting to see similar launch opportunities but you're able to build on how we've solved those problems in the past.
In the US, it is easy to see sales as a universal language. It can't be that different...right?
After moving to London, though, it's clear that everything from the personality to the needs of a UK business can be a bit different. One of the first things we're doing is working to understand what does work before trying to change everything. The US team has built knowledge and processes through years of learning, and I want to build on that foundation rather than start over.
I'm excited to experience living in such a multi-cultural city. I can't wait to explore different neighborhoods and try all the amazing international food that's available here! Aside from that, I'm a huge soccer (sorry - football) fan so that's definitely a bonus being so close to all the action.
If you’re interested in joining our team in the UK, be sure to check out our open positions here!
